Whose fault is it? Someone must be to blame for the all the destruction caused by Katrina! Is it FEMA, President Bush, the mayor of New Orleans, or the governor? Who do we point the finger at?
My mother always taught me that when you point a finger, three point back. Wes Granberg-Michaelson, general secretary of the Reformed Church of America has a great article in this week's issue of SojoMail, a week e-zine from Sojourners. In it he argues that this "natural disaster" or "act of God," is in fact largely due to the sinfulness of humanity. Every American, indeed every human being bears part of the blame for devastation Katrina caused.
We live in a fallen world, where our sins and the sins of others, going back to the time of Adam and Eve, retch havoc on the created order. What God created and called good, has become a source of incredible destruction and pain. To seek the holiness of heart to which we are called, involves more than just personal piety. It also includes defending God's creation and those who cannot defend themselves.
There's a great line at the end of "A Few Good Men," corporal Levitt explains their mistake; "We were to fight for those who can't fight for themselves. We were to fight for Willie." Those words sound to me like the marching order for Christian soldiers. Creation, the poor, the children, the mariginalized don't have the ability to fight for themselves. If we who follow Jesus Christ don't stand up for them, who will?
