Yesterday Josh came home from college for the day. He's helping direct a community theater production and auditions were yesterday. As we were sitting at the kitchen table waiting for dinner to get finished, he was telling Julie & I that when people find out that his dad's a pastor they're usually surprised. Josh doesn't fit most people's image of a PK any more than his dad fits the image of a pastor. Josh explains to them that his dad is "the coolest pastor he knows." Caulk one up for the old man.
It wasn't a minute later that the topic changed and Josh found out that I had made my own trail mix complete with dried fruit, nuts, granola, and of course M&M's. Suddenly, I became "a dork." And when he learned I'm thinking about getting a dehydrator, it was almost more than he could take. How could I consider doing something so uncool? The only exception would be if I made my own jerky. Not surprising, Josh likes jerky but hates dried fruit.
I did redeem myself somewhat when I auditioned for the play. I've done community theater before, but it's been about 10 years since I've been in a production. Josh informed me that if I got a part, he as the director would be harder on me than any of the other actors. I'm pretty sure I can handle any of his criticism, after all I'm a pastor, cricitism is a way of life.
I gained a few more points with him right before he took off, when he grabbed up the little bit of pocket cash I had dropped on the table. So over all I think I came out about even for the day. What more can a parent expect?
I'm living this stage with you. My older son just settled into the dorm for his freshman year. I'll be glad for any time he wants to hang around here at the house, since we're not so far away.
