Iowa has a football team

Corey Lewis wears the right number for the University of Northern Iowa Panthers.  UNI climbed to the top of the polls in this week's NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (what used to be NCAA Division 1AA).  With Iowa's big two universities having dismal seasons at best, UNI 6-0 record is giving football fans in the Hawkeye state (better change that to the Panther state) something to clear about.  Since a considerable amount of my money goes to UNI, (our son is a junior there) I'm especially pleased.  Go Panthers!!!

I just couldn't let this news pass without making sure my blogging buddies knew about it.

March Madness Begins!

There's nothing in the world like March Madness!  But it's not the Blue Devils or the Huskies or the Bruins or any other perpetual power that makes March Madness what it is.  It's the schools like Hampton or Bucknell that I for one don't even know where they're located that bring the real excitement to the tournament.  Who will be the Cinderella team at this year's big dance?

And it's not the big name players that draw my attention, but people like Alex Thompson (pictured right) who come in off the bench and give their team the spark it takes to win the game, as Alex did Sunday against the Buckeyes.  Go Hawks!!

March Madness is the one time each year when the no-name player or school really has a chance to be a giant killer.  So while Memphis or Duke will likely walk away with the trophy at the end of it all, until that time I'm cheering for the Cinderellas.

Big night in Detroit

I've been a Steelers fan since way back in the 70's & 80's, but for the past 25 years there has been much to cheer about.  That changed last night as the  Steelers outscored, though maybe didn't outplay the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl.

Actually, I rarely watch any kind of professional sports.  With the Steelers in the playoffs, I've seen more minutes on NFL football over the last 4 weeks than I have combined in the last 4 years.  I like many Americans watch the Super Bowl each year more for the commercials that the game. 

On the topic of commercials, my favorites were:

3.  Sierra Mist Security Wand
4.  Budweiser Magic Refrig
5.  Diet Pepsi Stunt Double  (though I'm really a Diet Coke drinker, it was a great put down)
